Hospital Background

The St. John of God Hospital, Amrahia, was established in August 2011 by the Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God in collaboration with the Catholic Bishop of Accra after the elders of Amrahia made an appeal for a Clinic/Hospital for the community. The immediate past Provincial Superior (Br. Bartholomew Kamara) continued discussions and consultations with major stakeholders. With support from Br. Kearns, Br. Bartholomew started the Clinic in 2011 Two small rooms at the Provincial Curia, which serve as a consulting room and dispensary, were set up. As the number of patients increased it became necessary to start the construction of a permanent place for the hospital The General Curia of the Hospitaller Order of St, John of God (Italy), Juan Ciudad ONGD (Spain), Manos Unidas (Spain) and Western European Province (Ireland) provided funds to support the construction of the hospital, a maternity block and a theatre. As construction works progressed patients continued to be seen at the small consulting room, the dispensary and another room serving as Laboratory at the Provincial Curia. The Main hospital and the maternity blocks were commissioned on 14th October 2015. The main hospital and maternity project were completed and commissioned by the Father General (Fr. Etayo) and the Vicar General of the Accra Arch Diocese on 14th October 2015 with a bed capacity of 15. As patronage of the facility increased, a theatre was constructed to meet patients' needs and demands. This was completed and commissioned in 2019 Since its humble beginnings, the Clinic has grown in size and stature into a hospital offering a range of clinical, preventive and promotive Health services not only for the people of Amrahia but also for the neighbouring districts as well.
